If you’re thinking about solar, it’s normal to wonder whether your roof is ready for it, or if it should be replaced first.
Ultimately, it depends on your roof type, condition, and your long-term goals. Let’s break it down.
Is Your Roof Too Old to Go Solar? When to Replace It First
If your roof is two decades old or more, it’s usually worth replacing it before your solar panels go up. Solar systems last 25+ years, so you may want to avoid having to uninstall and reinstall panels for roofing work a few years down the line.
What About “Borderline” Roofs?
Sometimes we see roofs that aren’t failing, but they’re not in great shape either.
In these situations, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. If your roof still has a few solid years left, it may make sense to hold off. But if you want your solar install to stay untouched for the long haul, replacing now might save you money and stress later.
If Your Roof Is In Good Condition
If your roof is already in good shape and structurally sound, then no replacement is needed. We’ll confirm everything during the site visit to make sure your roof is ready to support solar.
Some Roof Types Need Special Attention
Even if your roof is in great condition, the type of material matters:
Woodshake roofs always need to be replaced with new plywood before solar is installed.
Extremely lightweight or fragile clay tiles usually aren’t suitable for standard mounting. In these case, the picture-frame method is recommended, in which shingles are installed just under the solar panels, keeping the rest of your tile roof intact and maintaining your home’s aesthetics.
You don’t always need a new roof to go solar, but in some cases, it’s the smartest move long-term. If you’re unsure, reach out to us for a consultation where we can discuss your roof condition and goals in detail.
