Read This Before Going Solar

Before you sign anything, here’s what I’ve learned from real-world installs—the kind of stuff most solar ads leave out.
Going solar is a smart long-term move. It can lower your bills, add value to your home, and reduce your dependence on the utility. But I’ve also seen people go in with the wrong expectations, or get burned by rushed installs, vague quotes, and fine print they didn’t fully understand. So here’s what I wish more homeowners knew before they start the process. Hopefully it helps you avoid surprises and make a decision that actually works for your home and goals.
1. Cheapest quote? Usually not the best deal.
If one bid is way lower than the rest, something’s missing: materials, service, or future support. It’s easy to cut corners on paper. Make sure you know what’s included.
2. Solar projects take time. That’s normal.
Permits, inspections, utility paperwork — it all adds up. Most projects take 4–10 weeks from start to finish. The real red flag is when someone says “we’ll have it done in a week.”
3. Your roof needs to be ready too.
Your roof doesn't necessarily need to be brand new, but it does need to be in decent shape. If your roof needs major work in the next few years, you could end up paying to remove and reinstall your solar system later. We evaluate all roofs prior to installation to avoid surprises down the road.
4. Bigger systems aren’t always better.
A right-sized system, designed for your usage, will save you more long-term than filling the whole roof just because you can.
5. Warranties vary — a lot.
Ask who handles service, what’s covered (and what isn’t), and how long it lasts. Panels, workmanship, roof—they all have different terms, and some companies quietly skip certain protections.
6. If someone pressures you to sign fast, pause.
Any company confident in their work should give you space to decide. A quote that’s only good “for today” isn’t a real deal, it’s a tactic.
